‘Local History Resists Homogenizing Missions of Fascism’
“Local histories act as a means of political resistance against the Homogenizing missions of fascism”, said Dr. KM Bharathan, while launching Kurungottunadu, the second title in the series of local history, authored by KP Abdul Majeed and published by Other Books. “While writing local history, we are not confined to the history of a land and its boundaries; rather local histories are built and shared in people’s minds as it is people’s history, experiences and culture. Thus, history becomes a process that mostly runs antithetical to the official historiography sponsored by the state. Documenting parallel histories contributes to the diversity of our tradition”, added Dr. Bharathan. He praised the painstaking effort undertaken by KP Abdul Majeed in writing the book, particularly in collecting hitherto unavailable data, by going through rare sources, authentic documents and by collecting oral traditions. Majeed, at the same time, saved the narrative from being nostalgic and sentimentalist, he opined.
Prof. AP Zubair received the first copy. Dr. M Nisar delivered a lecture on “the Importance of Local History”. He said that local histories serve as a carrier retaining indigenous knowledge in diverse disciplines while national projects of history writing often overlook marginalized communities and local traditions. When the history of the nation state becomes dominant, local histories and the people they narrate are made invisible. People and sections in the margins are absent in national archives, whereas they are vibrant in local histories. Our task is to get them documented and thus continue the diversity of our lives. Also, we have to refrain from making it a propaganda history”, he added.
VK Kuttu, author of Thalassery Oru Muslim Charithram, the first local history project of Other Books, felicitated in the session. Author KP Abdul Majeed was present on the occasion. Dr. Auswaf Ahsan welcomed the audience, M Noushad introduced the title and Nasfath paid a vote of thanks.
The title is a revised reprint of the same title published by Mythry publications in 2005. The book launch ceremony was organized at Mahe Malayala Kalagramam on March 13, 2016.
